I like cars with real exhaust tips. I am getting tired of seeing the fake ones on 90% of new vehicles. I know it has to do with some stupid safety law but instead of having fake ones they should hide them underneath the bumper it gives the car a cleaner look. Then again I might be in the minority here.

Agree 100%. I hate when manufacturers put chrome surroundings around the actual exhausts to make it look better.

Fake ones? Safety law? Educate me.

It's not weird at all. Fake exhaust tips are extremely lame. They're lame on the last gen IS-F and they're lame on the Ferrari California. They're lame on any car that has them. If you're not going to dump the exhaust out the back via a real exhaust tip then don't have any tips at all.

In the US it is illegal for manufactures to have exhaust tips protruding from the bumper. Why? Cause someone might burn their leg...

It isn't like they can't get around te law either. The Aventador has the real ones out in the open and it looks badass!

Wait what? Fake tips? Those exist?

If you walk that ridiculously close to a car, you deserve burnt ankles.

Yup. Take a look.

What is the law, exactly?

I'd take it one step further and state that visibly real exhaust is better. I hate cars with plastic fascias over the exhaust, and let's be honest. The best exhaust is the kind you can gawk at:
I rest my case.

Sidepipes are the greatest invention since the toilet.

The law is about having the bumper stick out further than the tips, for impact safety. You can have tips, but the furthest point of the bumper must extend past the furthest point on the exhaust.
The leg burns only caused voluntary recalls, and are not mandated by law.

Well that's stupid.

Exposed tailpipes pose a danger to people's legs. At least that is what the US government thinks. One reason why the FRS got those stupidly small exhaust tips in the US.

Ahh I got yah. I heard it off the Internet and never looked anything else up on it. Also how does having the exhaust stick out further than the bumper change the safety of a vehicle... I don't think it does.

Did someone say tits? I love tits. Especially when they extend.

It doesn't but the government thinks it does.

I always think real>fake. Even if they are smaller ;)

As we know the exhaust is the most important part of a car when in a crash...

I used to like the California's exhaust tips. Until now.

It would take a massive idiot to get injured by exposed tailpipes. Oh wait, this is America.
The only circumstance in which I could see someone getting injured in such a way is if they held their leg up to a tailpipe for more than a few seconds.

I have touched the tips with my finger just to see how hot it gets... It stings but nothing painful and I had to leave it there for a couple seconds.

Well it's metal and the bumper skin is plastic.

When I'm president I'll disband the NHTSA and rule traffic safety with an iron fist. An reasonable and fair iron fist. No more dumb "pedestrian safety" requirements like the exhaust tips and I'm bringing back hood ornaments. I think I'll make those mandatory. The consumer needs to be more educated the burden of safety should be on the consumer and not the manufacturer. If I want to make a car with no doors or windows or lights and have the driver literally sit on the fuel tank, fine. If someone is dumb enough to buy it and they end up dying (which they would) then it's their fault for buying an obviously unsafe vehicle. Consumers need to take responsibility for their actions and their purchases. Ugh it pisses me the f*uck off. #rant

That's probably their logic, forgetting the fact that a pipe is also hollow and just as easily crushed as that urethane-covered styrofoam in the back.

How hot could it possibly be at the end of the pipes? My R6's yoshi pipe is cold to the touch after a long ride.

I dont know about anywhere else but I'm pretty sure in PA sidepipes are illegal unless they are factory. The exhaust has to exit behind the rear wheels.

They're illegal in a lot of places. Don't care, still awesome.

My MazdaSpeed 6 was the worst offender of this.
